Perched Villages of the Côte d'Azur: The Complete Private Chauffeur Circuit from Cannes
There is another Côte d'Azur. Not the one of palaces and yachts — though we know that one well too. A Côte d'Azur of ochre stone, winding cobbled lanes, scents of lavender and jasmine, and breathtaking views over the Mediterranean. These are the perched villages of the hinterland: Eze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Grasse, Mougins. Four names that sound like the perfect travel itinerary.
The challenge is that these villages are, by definition, perched. Narrow hairpin roads, virtually no parking in high season, distances that look short on the map but require an hour of concentrated driving around tight bends. Getting lost in Saint-Paul-de-Vence searching for a parking space for 40 minutes, in 32°C heat, with impatient children — that is precisely the experience our clients ask us to help them avoid.
That is why we designed this perched-village circuit with a private chauffeur from Cannes. You get in. We drive. You explore. We wait, or we come back at the time you choose.

Why explore the perched villages with a private chauffeur?
The perched villages of the Azurean hinterland share a geography that is deliberately hostile to the modern car. Built in the Middle Ages for defensive reasons — pirates, invasions — they dominate valleys from rocky spurs. Their charm lies precisely in this apparent inaccessibility. But that same inaccessibility creates a real logistical reality in 2026: scarce parking, one-way departmental roads, pedestrian lanes barely wide enough for a donkey.
The classic solution is to hire a car and improvise. The reality is that you will spend a significant part of your day searching for parking, consulting Google Maps on blind corners, and wondering whether the road you have taken is actually a private driveway. Not exactly the right mindset to appreciate the Fondation Maeght or the May roses in Grasse.
With a private chauffeur on an as-directed basis, the logistics disappear entirely from your radar. The driver knows the access routes, the drop-off points closest to each village centre, the opening times of the sites. He drops you at the nearest point to the pedestrian heart of each village, then parks at a distance while you explore. When you are ready, a quick message is all it takes — and he is there in two minutes.
This type of excursion is a perfect match for our as-directed chauffeur service: a premium vehicle and a professional driver at your disposal for the half-day or full day, at a fixed rate agreed in advance. No meter running, no surprises, no disputes on the way back.
Eze Village: the vertigo of possibility
Eze is probably the most photographed perched village on the Côte d'Azur. Perched at 429 metres altitude on a rocky peak between Nice and Monaco, it offers a 360° view over the Mediterranean that leaves even seasoned visitors speechless. On a clear day — and the Côte d'Azur has 300 sunny days a year — you can make out the Corsican coastline in the distance.
The medieval village itself is a labyrinth of vaulted passages, stone staircases, covered walkways and tiny squares. Former fishermen's houses have been converted into art galleries, jewellers' workshops, and local artisans' shops. The Hartung-Bergman Foundation, the Exotic Garden at the summit (ticketed but essential), and the castle ruins form the historic heart.
What you need to know before visiting:
Eze lies on the Moyenne Corniche (D6007), approximately 45 minutes from Cannes and 15 minutes from Nice. The village itself is strictly pedestrian. The only public parking is below the village — allow 10 to 15 minutes of walking uphill from the car park. In July and August, this car park is full by 10:00. Our driver drops you as close as possible to the pedestrian entrance, then meets you at an agreed time.
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a complete visit. The Exotic Garden alone deserves 45 minutes. Several terrace restaurants offer lunch with sea views — book ahead in high season (Château Eza, La Chèvre d'Or for the ultra-premium end; L'Aigle d'Or for a more accessible option).
Eze as part of a combined circuit: if you are coming from Cannes via Monaco, we offer a Monaco–Cannes transfer that can incorporate a stop in Eze on the return leg. Perfect for combining Monaco shopping in the morning and village exploration in the late afternoon.

The road between Monaco and Eze Village runs alongside exceptional panoramas over the Mediterranean.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence: the art of getting lost
Saint-Paul-de-Vence is not simply a beautiful village. It is a place that helped shape the history of modern art. In the 1920s, Paul Roux, the innkeeper at the Colombe d'Or, accepted artworks in payment for rooms and meals. What looked like the resourcefulness of a cash-strapped proprietor became one of the finest private art collections in the world: Picasso, Matisse, Miró, Léger, Braque, Calder — their works still adorn the walls of the restaurant La Colombe d'Or today. Booking a table for lunch there is the equivalent of visiting a private art gallery while eating a bouillabaisse.
The village itself is an intact medieval enclave — 16th-century ramparts, cobbled lanes, baroque fountains, a cemetery where Marc Chagall rests. The Fondation Maeght, 500 metres on foot from the ramparts, is one of the finest contemporary art foundations in Europe. Its permanent collection (Giacometti, Miró, Calder, Braque) and its temporary exhibitions are worth the trip in their own right.
Why it is complicated by private car:
Saint-Paul-de-Vence is 25 kilometres from Nice and 35 kilometres from Cannes. In high season, the access road (D7) becomes congested by 10:00. The paid car parks below the village are often full between 11:00 and 16:00. GPS systems tend to route cars along small tracks that are not proper roads. Result: stress, lost time, frayed nerves before you even enter the village.
With our service, your chauffeur takes the optimal access route according to the time of day and current traffic. He drops you at the ramparts entrance and waits in an appropriate area — or leaves and returns at the time you set. The Fondation Maeght is a two-minute walk from the main gate.
Practical tip: La Colombe d'Or is one of the most difficult restaurants to book on the Côte d'Azur in summer. If you want to have lunch there, reserve three to four weeks in advance. Outside of high season (September–October), it is more accessible — and the Azurean hinterland in autumn is just as spectacular.

Grasse: the world capital of perfume
Seventeen kilometres north of Cannes, Grasse holds a unique position in world cultural heritage: it has been the undisputed capital of perfume since the 17th century. The microclimate of its hillsides — 330 days of sunshine per year, morning dew, a southerly breeze carrying sea moisture — created ideal conditions for growing perfume flowers. Centifolia rose, jasmine, tuberose, iris, lavender: these flowers made the town's fortune and gave French perfumery its worldwide reputation.
Today, the great perfume houses — Chanel, Dior, Hermès — continue to source from Grasse. The perfumeries open to the public (Fragonard, Galimard, Molinard) offer guided tours of their workshops and perfume-creation workshops where you can make your own fragrance (allow 1.5 hours for the workshop; booking recommended). The experience is unique and particularly appreciated by families and groups.
What Grasse offers beyond perfume:
Old Grasse is often underestimated. Its colourful ochre and sienna-hued lanes, its covered markets, its Notre-Dame-du-Puy cathedral (with three Rubens paintings and a Fragonard) make up a coherent and authentic architectural heritage. The view over the coastal plain from the upper terraces of the town — with Cannes visible in the distance — is striking.
May is the best month to visit Grasse. The centifolia rose is in full bloom. The Expo Rose (late May, early June) transforms the town into a flower festival. We are in May 2026: it is exactly the right time to plan this excursion.
Our dedicated page on Cannes–Grasse transfers details all the points of interest and distances from various departure points on the Côte d'Azur. For a perched-village circuit, Grasse fits naturally as the third stop after Eze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

The Maison Fragonard in Grasse offers free guided tours of its perfume-creation workshops.
Mougins: Picasso's village of Michelin stars
Mougins is eight kilometres from Cannes. It is technically the closest of the four villages in this circuit — and perhaps the most sophisticated. Perched on a wooded hill overlooking the Siagne plain, the medieval village of Mougins is known for two things: Picasso, who spent his final 12 years there (1961–1973), and its exceptional concentration of gastronomic restaurants.
For a commune of 22,000 inhabitants, Mougins boasts a number of Michelin-starred and Michelin-referenced establishments that makes it one of the most densely starred gastronomic destinations in France. L'Amandier de Mougins, Le Moulin de Mougins (historic, multiple stars under Vergé), La Place de Mougins — every address has its story and its own culinary proposition. If your circuit is to culminate in a memorable dinner, Mougins is the obvious candidate.
Beyond gastronomy:
The Mougins Museum of Classical Art (MACM) deserves a special mention. Housed in a 17th-century private mansion, it presents ancient and modern works in dialogue — a Roman Venus opposite a Picasso, a Greek amphora alongside a Dali. It is a surprising and rare museum experience. Allow 1.5 hours for an attentive visit.
The village itself is immaculately maintained — flowers in the windows, flowing fountains, shaded squares, art galleries in every corner. It is a village that has deliberately tended to itself, without the mass tourism that has turned some neighbouring villages into medieval theme parks.

Mougins, 8 km from Cannes, is the French Riviera's favourite gastronomic village.
The ideal itinerary: a full day from Cannes
Here is the itinerary we recommend for a four-village circuit in a single day from Cannes. It is designed to maximise time in the villages and minimise driving during peak hours.
Departure: 9:00 from Cannes (hotel or any address)
9:00 → 10:00 — Cannes → Eze (45 min): You ascend the Moyenne Corniche with a progressively unfolding view over the Mediterranean. Arrival in Eze before the shops open and the tourist crowds arrive. The ideal moment for the Exotic Garden, almost entirely to yourself.
10:00 → 12:00 — Visit Eze: Exotic Garden (45 min), medieval lanes, art galleries. Possible coffee on the terraces with sea views.
12:00 → 12:45 — Eze → Saint-Paul-de-Vence (45 min): Route via Nice and Cagnes-sur-Mer, or via the Grande Corniche depending on traffic. Your chauffeur adapts the route in real time.
12:45 → 15:00 — Lunch and visit Saint-Paul-de-Vence: Lunch at La Colombe d'Or (if booked in advance) or at one of the village's other restaurants. Visit the ramparts and the Fondation Maeght in the early afternoon.
15:00 → 16:00 — Saint-Paul → Grasse (45 min): Route via Vence and the Mouans-Sartoux plateau. The green hinterland contrasts sharply with the coastline.
16:00 → 17:30 — Visit Grasse: Free guided tour of the Fragonard perfumery, then a stroll through old Grasse. In May, the roses are at their peak bloom.
17:30 → 18:00 — Grasse → Mougins (20 min): Descent towards Mougins via the D3. The late-afternoon light over the village is spectacular.
18:00 → 20:00 — Aperitif and/or dinner in Mougins: Several terraces offer drinks with views. Dinner optional (advance booking strongly recommended in high season).
20:00 → 20:30 — Return to Cannes: An easy and quick journey; traffic is generally light in the evening.
In high season (July–August), the villages are very busy between 11:00 and 16:00. For Eze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence in particular, opt for an early departure (8:30) to enjoy the sites before the crowds. The midday heat is also more bearable with this timing.
Half-day option: if you only have half a day, we recommend the Mougins + Grasse circuit (departure 9:00 from Cannes, return 14:00) or Eze alone with a panoramic lunch (departure 10:00, return 14:30). These circuits correspond to a four-hour as-directed booking from €350.

Frequently asked questions about the perched villages circuit
Can you really visit 4 villages in a single day?
Yes, it is entirely feasible and it is the itinerary we recommend most often for a complete discovery of the Azurean hinterland. The key is a departure between 8:30 and 9:00 from Cannes and not trying to see absolutely everything in each village. Eze deserves a minimum of 1.5 hours for the Exotic Garden and the lanes. Saint-Paul-de-Vence works well in 2 hours including lunch. Grasse, 1.5 hours is enough for the perfumery and the old quarter. Mougins, one hour for drinks and a stroll. The chauffeur adapts the stop times to your pace.
What is the best season for this circuit?
May and June are exceptional: the Grasse rose is in bloom (especially in May), temperatures are mild (22–26°C), and the sites are not yet overrun by summer tourists. September and October are also excellent — the autumn light on the perched villages is particularly beautiful and restaurant terraces are still open. July and August are possible but require a very early departure (no later than 8:30) to avoid the heat and peak-season crowds.
Can the chauffeur recommend restaurants along the circuit?
Absolutely. Our chauffeurs have known these villages and their addresses for years. They can guide you according to your budget, your preferences, and — often more importantly — which restaurants accept walk-in guests on the day. For high-end establishments (La Colombe d'Or, Château Eza, Mougins Michelin-starred venues), we recommend booking before your visit — our chauffeurs can provide direct telephone numbers.
Is it possible to modify the itinerary during the day?
That is the main strength of as-directed hire over a rigid organised tour. You can decide on the spot to stay longer in one village, skip a stop, or add a spontaneous detour. If you discover a village not on the original plan (Vence, Biot, Tourrettes-sur-Loup), the chauffeur adapts. The only constraint is the end time of the as-directed booking, which we can easily extend if you wish to carry on (billed hourly beyond the package).
Can we combine this circuit with a transfer from Nice Airport?
Yes, and this is a very popular option. If you are arriving at the airport in the morning and your hotel is in Cannes, we can incorporate one or two perched villages on the arrival leg. Eze is ideally positioned on the Nice–Cannes route. Saint-Paul-de-Vence can easily be added. This transforms your Nice Airport–Cannes transfer into a first half-day of discovery. The supplement is calculated based on the additional time required.
How many people can take part in the circuit?
From 1 to 6 people for a Mercedes V-Class (van). For groups of 7 to 12 people, we deploy two vehicles with two coordinated chauffeurs — both groups follow the same circuit and meet up at each stop. For larger groups (team building, seminars, MICE), we regularly coordinate fleets of 3 to 8 vehicles with a synchronised circuit.
Are there entrance fees in the villages or museums?
The villages themselves are freely accessible — they are open municipalities, not theme parks. Some interior sites are ticketed: the Eze Exotic Garden (approx. €6), the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence (approx. €20), and the Mougins Museum of Classical Art (approx. €15). Perfumery visits in Grasse (Fragonard, Galimard, Molinard) are free — the perfume-creation workshops, however, are ticketed (allow €40–60 per person). We can help you plan your visit budget when confirming your reservation.
Does Plug-In Cannes offer bespoke circuits for corporate groups?
Yes — a significant part of our activity is dedicated to MICE groups (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Events), which are particularly numerous on the Côte d'Azur. Corporate seminars, team-building events, client incentive programmes — we build bespoke transport and excursion programmes, including perched-village circuits but also visits to wine estates, boat trips from Cannes or Monaco, and private dinners in hinterland villas.
